Beat Culture Takes Over The New Parish During Hiero Day Weekend

Last September, The New Parish venue in Oakland, California played host to an exciting event. Beat Culture was a producer showcase event in partnership with the annual Hiero Day music festival. On the stage that night were legendary beat makers and up-and-coming producers representing a range of styles and sounds. From DJ Battlecat to Dibiase to DJ Fresh, there was something for everyone. But this event wasn’t just about music; it was also about celebrating the culture of beat making. Let’s take a look at what made this event so special.

The Art of Beat Making

Beat making is an art form all its own. It requires skill, creativity, and dedication to perfect. While most people might think that beat making is just about creating beats on a computer or drum machine, it’s actually much more than that. It involves creating entire compositions from start to finish—everything from melody creation to arrangement and mixing. And while it’s possible to create beats on any instrument, most modern producers use digital tools such as drum machines, synthesizers, and software programs like Ableton Live or Logic Pro X.

At Beat Culture, we got to see some of these tools in action as the performers created their tracks live onstage—from DJ Battlecat spinning on his classic turntables to Linafornia jamming out on her SP404 and SP555 set up. We even got a glimpse into the future when founder of Beat Culture Nefarious! took the stage with his custom built midi controller and performed an entirely improvised set using only his fingers!

Celebrating Local Talent

In addition to the headlining acts, members of Sacramento-based producer collective Flip A Beat Club (FABC) held down a patio session all night long—showing off their skills and keeping guests entertained with their original beats and remixes throughout the night. It was great seeing young artists being given a platform to showcase their talents alongside some of hip hop’s biggest names—and it made us proud to be part of such an amazing culture!

Beat Culture was an incredible event that celebrated not only great music but also beat making culture itself. From legendary DJs to up-and-coming producers, we had the privilege of experiencing some amazing performances from talented artists from all over California—with inspiring sets from both headliners and local talent alike! There’s nothing quite like watching someone create music right before your eyes; it truly is something special and we can’t wait for next year’s show!
